And at first you think: “Wow, this is so great!” And then, after a little bit, you begin to think: “Hm, this hug has lingered on a bit too long for my taste.” And then your friend squeezes you even tighter? And you finally admit: “THIS IS AWESOME, BECAUSE IT’S A HUG!”? Well, if you know the feeling, and ESPECIALLY if you don’t yet know the feeling, come hear Jeffrey David Stauch ’05 read from personal essays as well as excerpts from his memoir. Green Drinks: Green Winter Wear, Wednesday, January 18, 5:00 – 7:00 pm GreenDrinks.org is a global movement aimed at connecting people informally in cities throughout the world for the purpose of brainstorming and networking on green topics in a relaxed, relatively unstructured setting. Middlebury’s version of Green Drinks meets the third Wednesday of each month at 51 Main and features door prizes, free snacks, drink discounts and themes. This month’s theme: green winter wear. Relayers will be on hand to collect the donations you’ve received. Bonus: The Paradiddles will pop in at 7 to perform! Verbal Onslaught ft. Catarina Campbell ’11, Thursday, January 19, 9:00 – 11:00 pm Drawing from our Middlebury community of faculty, staff, students, local community members and other special guests, Verbal Onslaught adds dynamic poetic and cultural diversity to our vibrant town nestled between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks. This month’s Verbal Onslaught is dedicated to poetic verse inspired by the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring Middlebury alumna Catarina Campbell ’11. Come share your work or listen to others share theirs. Taylor Smith ’12, Friday, January 20, 10:00 pm – 12:00 am When he’s not performing as a member of Burlington-based acts The Peasant Dramatic and Dr. Ruckus, Taylor Smith ’12 goes it alone with his eponymous six-string, dealing in impassioned folk and blues tunes which arc from tales of heartbreak and longing into, often, the philosophical and vision-like. With “raspy vocals and a flair for vivid imagery and storytelling,” this is music that you’ll find woven into your thoughts long after you stop listening. Benefit Dinner: Build a Library in Kenya, Saturday, January 21, 7:00 pm Middlebury students are raising money to a build a library in Nairobi, Kenya. The library is for the high school New Dawn, which was co-founded by Kennedy Mugo ’12 five years ago. Tickets for $35 and $50 are available for purchase ahead of time.
