January 23rd, 2012
Upcoming @ 51 MainJazz Jam, Wednesday, January 25, 8:00 – 10:00 pm Hosted by Michael Dickerson ’12. All jazz musicians and listeners welcome. Less experienced jazz musicians are encouraged to work on specific standards before calling one on stage. Ubiquitous Coyote, Thursday, January 26, 8:00 – 10:00 pm The Ubiquitous Coyote is a singer-songwriter duo featuring Susan Nop (keyboards & vocals) and Matthew Dickerson (guitar, bass, mandolin, harmonica, & vocals). They play an eclectic mix of harmony-rich lyric-oriented music ranging from deeply textured and occasionally dark Americana narratives to soulful blues that brings out their inner lounge lizard. They will be joined at 51 Main by special guests Michael Dickerson ’12 (keyboards and percussion) and Michael Corn (on various stringed instruments). Glenn Roth, Friday, January 27, 10:00 pm – 12:00 am In the vaulted splendor of Grand Central Terminal, Glenn Roth’s sonic sorcery undercuts the shrieking trains and rushed din of travelers, conjuring an oasis of peace and beauty amid the chaos. Glenn, a licensed performer in the MTA’s Music Under New York program, is not your typical commuter from Connecticut. His fingers work magic on the acoustic guitar, creating a soundscape of compelling melodies that invite you to leave the cityrush behind on an aural escape. Glenn’s guitar playing is fiery and highly original, with finger-picked compositions that are complex and melodically rich. With the exception of Loop, a multilayered construct in which each flat-picked stratum is built, in turn, on another, Glenn is purely a fingerstyle player, his thumb riding the bassline and the melody driving all. His compositions suggest multiple guitars, but it’s really just one guy, ten flying fingers, one instrument. They Might Be Gypsies, Saturday, January 28, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am They Might Be Gypsies is the high energy Gypsy swing guitars of father & son Greg & Aidan Ryan. A gypsy at heart, Greg grew up traveling the country and playing music with his family. He draws from influences including Folk, Jazz, Bluegrass, & World Music. Young Aidan has been performing since he was six and has recorded two CDs of original music. Vermont Book Shop Book Discussion, Tuesday, January 31, 7:00 pm Join the Vermont Book Shop at 51 Main for a discussion of “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. Dayve Huckett & Russ Lawton, Thursday, February 2, 8:00 – 10:00 pm Join 51 Main regular Dayve Huckett with special guest Russ Lawton on drums. Dayve’s hybrid style embraces a mixture of fingerstyle, rock, classical, jazz, folk, and new music performed on steel and nylon string guitars.
