Mark LaVoie with Scott Robinson, Wednesday, October 21, 8:30 – 11:00 pm

For more than 37 years, professional harmonica player Mark LaVoie has been on a quest for the “Biggest” tone. About 12 years ago, he had the opportunity to experiment with a series of harmonica combs made from several different metals. When he played the harmonica containing a titanium metal comb, he knew he had found what he was looking for: the cleanest, clearest, biggest tone he had ever produced.  He will be joined by Middlebury College’s Scott Robinson on guitar and voice.

Poor Howard, Thursday, October 22, 8:30 – 11 pm

Poor Howard’s 12-string guitar has the solid, propulsive groove of a steady-moving freight train; and he has an uncanny way of singing classic blues tunes as if their hard-luck stories were happening today.  In his care, old songs never seem old, but timeless, personal and pulsing with knowable human emotions.  His own songs nestle beside them as if they grew up together.

Ava and the Gardeners, Friday, October 23, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am

A new act based in Vermont fronted by one of the most extraordinary voices we’ve heard in a while, Ava Kerr, who also plays piano for the group.  With her sweet and rounded, utterly luscious vocals, reminiscent of Zooey Deschanel, Regina Spektor, (and dare we say Judy Garland??), she’s a voice that could take these guys far.  With Peter Coccoma on guitar (and the occasional mandelin) and Sam Wyer on drums, the trio writes all their own stuff; with each song, they craft three or so minutes of poetry, lush and stuffed with rich imagery.

Emily Hubley Reception, Saturday, October 24, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

A reception to celebrate the 3pm and 8pm screenings of Hubley’s first feature film, THE TOE TACTIC and two of her short films: Pigeon Within and Set Set Spike, at Middlebury College’s Dana Auditorium. Ms Hubley will attend the 8pm screening and discuss her work afterward.

THE TOE TACTIC had its theatrical premiere in January 2009 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has been released on DVD by Kino International.  With THE TOE TACTIC, Hubley continues to layer human truths, working with live elements to depict a reality that is at once subjective, honest and unique.

Bread Bones, Saturday, October 24, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am

Folk trio. Bread and Bones is a Vermont-based acoustic trio performing original music with a strong traditional-roots foundation.  Their sound is characterized by imaginative two- and three-part harmonies over solid guitar and bass work.
