Andrea has sung in a number of musical groups as well as performed in an alternative theater annual production called Night Fires, for seven years. The exploration of composing her own songs on the guitar as well as a drone instrument called the shruti box is a relatively new experience for her, but one that is highly rewarding. Andrea is constantly surprised at how songs have the ability to arrive, sometimes when least expected. Attempting to sing from a true place, Andrea is excited by the continual journey of sharing her love for melody.

Jazz Jam, Wednesday, January 25, 8:00 – 10:00 pm

Hosted by Michael Dickerson ’12. All jazz musicians and listeners welcome. Less experienced jazz musicians are encouraged to work on specific standards before calling one on stage.

Ubiquitous Coyote, Thursday, January 26, 8:00 – 10:00 pm

The Ubiquitous Coyote is a singer-songwriter duo featuring Susan Nop (keyboards & vocals) and Matthew Dickerson (guitar, bass, mandolin, harmonica, & vocals). They play an eclectic mix of harmony-rich lyric-oriented music ranging from deeply textured and occasionally dark Americana narratives to soulful blues that brings out their inner lounge lizard. They will be joined at 51 Main by special guests Michael Dickerson ’12 (keyboards and percussion) and Michael Corn (on various stringed instruments).

Glenn Roth, Friday, January 27, 10:00 pm – 12:00 am

In the vaulted splendor of Grand Central Terminal, Glenn Roth’s sonic sorcery undercuts the shrieking trains and rushed din of travelers, conjuring an oasis of peace and beauty amid the chaos. Glenn, a licensed performer in the MTA’s Music Under New York program, is not your typical commuter from Connecticut. His fingers work magic on the acoustic guitar, creating a soundscape of compelling melodies that invite you to leave the cityrush behind on an aural escape.

Glenn’s guitar playing is fiery and highly original, with finger-picked compositions that are complex and melodically rich. With the exception of Loop, a multilayered construct in which each flat-picked stratum is built, in turn, on another, Glenn is purely a fingerstyle player, his thumb riding the bassline and the melody driving all. His compositions suggest multiple guitars, but it’s really just one guy, ten flying fingers, one instrument.

They Might Be Gypsies, Saturday, January 28, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am

They Might Be Gypsies is the high energy Gypsy swing guitars of father & son Greg & Aidan Ryan. A gypsy at heart, Greg grew up traveling the country and playing music with his family. He draws from influences including Folk, Jazz, Bluegrass, & World Music. Young Aidan has been performing since he was six and has recorded two CDs of original music.

You know when you see a friend for the first time in a long time and you rush at him and give him a big hug? And at first you think: “Wow, this is so great!” And then, after a little bit, you begin to think: “Hm, this hug has lingered on a bit too long for my taste.” And then your friend squeezes you even tighter? And you finally admit: “THIS IS AWESOME, BECAUSE IT’S A HUG!”? Well, if you know the feeling, and ESPECIALLY if you don’t yet know the feeling, come hear Jeffrey David Stauch ’05 read from personal essays as well as excerpts from his memoir. Listener discretion is advised.

Verbal Onslaught ft. Catarina Campbell ’11, Thursday, January 19, 9:00 – 11:00 pm

Drawing from our Middlebury community of faculty, staff, students, local community members and other special guests, Verbal Onslaught adds dynamic poetic and cultural diversity to our vibrant town nestled between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks. This month’s Verbal Onslaught is dedicated to poetic verse inspired by the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring Middlebury alumna Catarina Campbell ’11. Come share your work or listen to others share theirs.

Taylor Smith ’12, Friday, January 20, 10:00 pm – 12:00 am

When he’s not performing as a member of Burlington-based acts The Peasant Dramatic and Dr. Ruckus, Taylor Smith ’12 goes it alone with his eponymous six-string, dealing in impassioned folk and blues tunes which arc from tales of heartbreak and longing into, often, the philosophical and vision-like. With “raspy vocals and a flair for vivid imagery and storytelling,” this is music that you’ll find woven into your thoughts long after you stop listening.

Judson Kimble started playing guitar and composing his own music over ten years ago. He has been performing in various venues now for about four years.
Silentypes, Saturday, January 14, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am

Duke Ellington once said, “If it sounds good, it is good.” This simple yet powerful quote is perhaps the best description of Silentypes and the music that they commit themselves to creating. A four-part group, Silentypes spends very little time worrying about what genre their music will fall into, or if they are following conventional structures. Instead, they seek to make music that simply “sounds good.” The band founded itself in 2010 with members Andrew Pentz (bass/lead vocals), Adam Ciminello (organ/keys/vocals), Scott Wilson (drums/vocals) and Matthew Lynch (guitar/vocals). Coming from different backgrounds, the diversity of their influences is what has given way to the unique sound of Silentypes’ music.

Jeffrey David Stauch Hugs You WITH WORDS, Tuesday, January 17, 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Don & Jenn make and teach music in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. Their jazz- and folk-inspired originals and covers appeal to a varied audience. Guitarist and songwriter Don Sinclair has been a working musician for over 30 years. His style reveals influences from rock, jazz and classical music.
Dan Aaron, Friday, January 6, 8:00 – 10:00 pm

Bread and Bones, Thursday, December 15, 8:00 – 10:00 pm

Bread and Bones is a Vermont-based acoustic trio performing original music with a strong traditional-roots foundation. Made up of Richard Ruane, Beth Duquette and Mitch Barron, their sound is characterized by imaginative two- and three-part harmonies over solid guitar and bass work.

Telling Point, Friday, December 16, 10:00 pm – 12:00 am

Ask for the background of each member and you’ll understand how this Cleveland based duo came to have such an eclectic sound. Influences ranging from jazz and middle eastern to classic rock and new metal have caused Telling Point to classify their style as ‘Tribal Rock’. The commanding drums will keep you moving as the sensual vocals embrace you. The Telling Point Acoustic show provides listeners an intimate connection with the band. Each song is a story: personal, inviting. Whether it’s the djembe groove or the poetic lyrics, you’ll want to take this music in and let it touch you.

George, by George!) in his musical adventures.
